The Guardian - In Praise of The Republic, May 23, 2009

"In Praise of The Republic" ( In praise of the Republic). Here is the text. "Despite threatening noises from Silvio Berlusconi, the main center-left Italian newspaper has refused to stop asking for answers to 10 questions put to the Prime Minister about his affair with a teenager in Naples, Letizia. No other democratic leader could ignore the questions about this friendship in the way he did Berlusconi. His explanation of how he met the family Letizia does not hold. He did not explain the emergence of his young friend that the premier would have paved the way for in politics or show business. Nor are explanations of new revelations that the 18 year-old Miss Letizia owns four houses. This is much more that curiosity of the press. His wife said he can no longer be with a man who "frequents minors" and that he is "not well". Republic pointed out that the statements of Ms. Letizia on birthday gifts she received from the man called 'popes' suggest that they were friends since she was 15. The press remains one of the few forces critical in a society where almost all television channels respond to Mr. Berlusconi. So far, his only gesture to give explanations was to appear on a talk show host whose obsequious left him say a self-justifying monologue. But when a Republic reporter tried to ask him a question this week, Mr. Berlusconi lost his temper. "What right has to ask questions?" He shouted. The answer, in a democratic society, should be: "All rights in the world." Republic is fighting a lonely battle and deserves support. "
